Trademark Policy

"Normascope", "norma-scope", and the Normascope logo are trademarks of Harsha Attray, trading as Yutic. The Normascope command-line software is licensed under Apache-2.0. The trademarks are not.
Normascope Cloud is the official hosted service offered under the Normascope trademark. This policy applies to the Normascope mark whether used alone or as part of "Normascope Cloud" or another official product or service name.
Section 6 of the Apache License is where this is set out: the license grants no trademark rights beyond the limited uses that section describes — reasonable and customary use in describing the origin of the work, and reproducing the NOTICE file. This document says what that means in practice, and what else we permit, so you don't have to guess.
The short version: use the name to talk about our software, not to name yours.
You do not need permission to
- Say your project, product, or service works with, supports, integrates with, or is built on Normascope. - Write about Normascope — articles, tutorials, talks, reviews, comparisons, courses — including critical ones. - Redistribute the unmodified package under its own name, keeping its LICENSE and NOTICE files intact. - Use the name in the ordinary way to refer to the official software: bug reports, dependency lists, package manifests, documentation.
This is normal descriptive use, and nothing here restricts it.
You do need written permission to
- Name a fork, derivative, or modified version "Normascope" or anything confusingly similar. - Use the name or logo in your own product name, company name, domain name, social account, or package name — including as a prefix or suffix (normascope-cloud-hosting, @acme/normascope, normascope.io). - Use the logo, or any modified version of it, as your own mark. - Imply that we endorse, sponsor, certify, or are affiliated with you. - Sell merchandise bearing the name or logo.
Modified versions must be renamed
Apache-2.0 lets you fork and change the code. It does not let you keep the name. If you distribute a modified version, give it a different name and don't use our logo.
You may still say, factually, what it is derived from — "a fork of Normascope" is fine; "Normascope Plus" is not.
The reason is not possessiveness. Someone who installs a package called Normascope should get software we actually shipped. When the name stops guaranteeing that, it stops being useful to anyone, including forks.
Using the name correctly
- Normascope — the product. Capital N, one word, no space.
- `norma-scope` — the npm package. Lowercase, hyphenated, in code style.
- Normascope Cloud — the hosted service.
Don't pluralise it, possessive it, or use it as a verb.

Requests, questions, and anything this policy doesn't cover: hello@normascope.com. If you're unsure whether your use needs permission, ask — the answer is usually yes and it's usually quick.
Changes
This policy may be updated. It governs trademark use only; it never changes your rights under the Apache License, which are granted by the license shipped with that software and cannot be revoked by this document.
